Summary
Matriculation into graduate school comes with changes in academic expectations, but often in ways that graduate students are not expecting.This chapter offers advice regarding the students’ most adaptive approaches to coursework, getting started with research, and a spirit of experimentation while adapting to new workstyles.Addressing both the emotional experiences that accompany the start of graduate school and the professional challenges, this chapter should help all students worry less and find focus during an objectively confusing transition period.

Background
Subthreshold/attenuated syndromes are established precursors of full-threshold mood and psychotic disorders. Less is known about the individual symptoms that may precede the development of subthreshold syndromes and associated social/functional outcomes among emerging adults.
MethodsWe modeled two dynamic Bayesian networks (DBN) to investigate associations among self-rated phenomenology and personal/lifestyle factors (role impairment, low social support, and alcohol and substance use) across the 19Up and 25Up waves of the Brisbane Longitudinal Twin Study. We examined whether symptoms and personal/lifestyle factors at 19Up were associated with (a) themselves or different items at 25Up, and (b) onset of a depression-like, hypo-manic-like, or psychotic-like subthreshold syndrome (STS) at 25Up.
ResultsThe first DBN identified 11 items that when endorsed at 19Up were more likely to be reendorsed at 25Up (e.g., hypersomnia, impaired concentration, impaired sleep quality) and seven items that when endorsed at 19Up were associated with different items being endorsed at 25Up (e.g., earlier fatigue and later role impairment; earlier anergia and later somatic pain). In the second DBN, no arcs met our a priori threshold for inclusion. In an exploratory model with no threshold, >20 items at 19Up were associated with progression to an STS at 25Up (with lower statistical confidence); the top five arcs were: feeling threatened by others and a later psychotic-like STS; increased activity and a later hypo-manic-like STS; and anergia, impaired sleep quality, and/or hypersomnia and a later depression-like STS.
ConclusionsThese probabilistic models identify symptoms and personal/lifestyle factors that might prove useful targets for indicated preventative strategies.

Summary
This chapter describes the intellectual foundations that have influenced the learning sciences (LS) from its beginning, and identifies the core elements that unify many chapters of this handbook. Its theoretical influences include pragmatism, constructivism, sociocultural theory, situated learning, and distributed cognition. The chapter organizes LS research into two levels of analysis: the individual or elemental, and the sociocultural or systemic. The chapter reviews the methodologies that have been used to study each level of analysis and summarizes research findings at each level. LS research bridges research and practice and combines elemental and systemic perspectives on learning across a range of timescales of human behavior.

The ‘16Up’ study conducted at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute from January 2014 to December 2018 aimed to examine the physical and mental health of young Australian twins aged 16−18 years (N = 876; 371 twin pairs and 18 triplet sets). Measurements included online questionnaires covering physical and mental health as well as information and communication technology (ICT) use, actigraphy, sleep diaries and hair samples to determine cortisol concentrations. Study participants generally rated themselves as being in good physical (79%) and mental (73%) health and reported lower rates of psychological distress and exposure to alcohol, tobacco products or other substances than previously reported for this age group in the Australian population. Daily or near-daily online activity was almost universal among study participants, with no differences noted between males and females in terms of frequency or duration of internet access. Patterns of ICT use in this sample indicated that the respondents were more likely to use online information sources for researching physical health issues than for mental health or substance use issues, and that they generally reported partial levels of satisfaction with the mental health information they found online. This suggests that internet-based mental health resources can be readily accessed by adolescent Australians, and their computer literacy augurs well for future access to online health resources. In combination with other data collected as part of the ongoing Brisbane Longitudinal Twin Study, the 16Up project provides a valuable resource for the longitudinal investigation of genetic and environmental contributions to phenotypic variation in a variety of human traits.

Objective
Having frequent family dinners is associated with better diet quality in children; however, it is unknown whether the frequency of certain family meal types (i.e. dinner) is more strongly associated with better child weight and diet quality compared with other meal types (i.e. breakfast, lunch). Thus, the current study examined the frequency of eating breakfast, lunch or dinner family meals and associations with pre-school children’s overall diet quality (HEI-2010) and BMI percentile.
DesignCross-sectional baseline data (2012–2014) from two randomized controlled childhood obesity prevention trials, NET-Works and GROW, were analysed together.
SettingStudies were carried out in community and in-home settings in urban areas of Minnesota and Tennessee, USA.
SubjectsParent–child (ages 2–5 years) pairs from Minnesota (n 222 non-Hispanics; n 312 Hispanics) and Tennessee (n 545 Hispanics; n 55 non-Hispanics) participated in the study.
ResultsOver 80 % of families ate breakfast or lunch family meals at least once per week. Over 65 % of families ate dinner family meals ≥5 times/week. Frequency of breakfast family meals and total weekly family meals were significantly associated with healthier diet quality for non-Hispanic pre-school children (P<0·05), but not for Hispanic children. Family meal frequency by meal type was not associated with BMI percentile for non-Hispanic or Hispanic pre-school children.
ConclusionsBreakfast family meal frequency and total weekly family meal frequency were associated with healthier diet quality in non-Hispanic pre-school children but not in Hispanic children. Longitudinal research is needed to clarify the association between family meal type and child diet quality and BMI percentile.

Summary
The field of learning sciences (LS) grows out of a realization that the study of learning and behavior in complex settings demands powerful methodological approaches and theories that are not foregrounded in current member disciplines. The future capacity of LS to carry out its research and development mission relies heavily on the effectiveness of its associated graduate education programs. Yet, we argue that LS faces significant challenges – fault lines, in our terms – that are endemic to scientific research and to the culture of the university settings that house the current core research centers.
Fault lines are the institutional and disciplinary divisions that polarize the scholarly community and promote an “either–or” logic among its proponents and detractors. Historically in education, programs and disciplines often flow back and forth with the tide of current popularity that favors the benefits of one side or the other leading to a perpetual state of: identity crises, programmatic revisions, lack of disciplinary progress, cycles of rediscovery and retreading ideas, and marginalization within academe (Fenstermacher & Richardson, 1994). These fault lines stand to hamper the success of the LS research program and the education of its next generation of scholars.
It is in this context that the three coauthors, each from different institutions and disciplinary perspectives, brought together scholars from a range of LS graduate programs and research institutes to openly consider these challenges, the designs of their programs, and the relations of their programs to the program designs and training practices used by others.
In this chapter, we delve into these challenges and report on the outcomes of these discussions. As background, it is useful to describe some of the major themes that we believe have contributed to the development of LS in its current form. First, LS follows the lead of the field of Cognitive Science by orienting toward an object of study and by welcoming scholars that engage in the principal study of that object regardless of their home discipline. Cognitive Science casts that object of study to be cognition as computation (Chalmers, 1993/2012). In comparison, Janet Kolodner's (1991a) editorial from the inaugural issue of the Journal of the Learning Sciences orients the newly emerging field of LS as the investigation of “new ways of thinking about learning and teaching that will allow the cognitive sciences to have an impact on the practice of education” (p. 1).
